It Happened Again follows a besuited man burying a bloody secret deep in the woods.
This was my first time shooting anything on film, and it was a very fulfilling and quite educational. Capturing light and shadow and telling a story on 16mm film is a completely different process and experience which gave me a great appreciation not only for the ease that is provided by modern production equipment, but also the workflows and skill required for capturing a story through traditional methods.
It Happened Again is ultimately a film about conformity and hiding your true self from the world.
Something about shooting this story on an imperfect and chemical format lended the film a turbulent aesthetic, which echoes the ongoing discourse around identity and self. This aesthetic was leant into during the colour grade, where we went for a hazy, grainy and desaturated look, as though the story being told was one which had decayed and weathered over time.
It was a true privilege to contribute to this project, and I am beyond proud of how the cinematography brought the story to life.
